The Tacoma Narrows Bridge
Recently, builders completed a second bridge spanning the Tacoma Narrows in the state of Washington. The new eastbound bridge joins a now westbound span built in 1950. The elevator industry played a part in the construction, and ELEVATOR WORLD featured this story in its November 2006 issue. Alimak personnel lifts were used during the construction, and special-purpose elevator units from Champion Elevator Inc. were installed in the legs of two of the towers of the new bridge. Following the completion of the project, pictures of the bridge appeared in the Last Glance section of the October 2007 issue. Additional pictures from the construction phase and the completed project are presented here as EW Online Extras.
Elevator Drives: Past, Present and Future
Representatives from Magnetek, Inc. gave a presentation on “Elevator Drives: Past, Present and Future” for the National Association of Vertical Transportation Professionals at its Annual Forum held May 2-4 in Atlanta. This PowerPoint presentation is now available for view as an EW Online Extra.

Elevators in Children’s Book
In the October 2007 issue, ELEVATOR WORLD’s historian and museum curator Dr. Lee Gray wrote about several children’s books that feature elevators. Pictures from some of these books, plus songs inspired by Alligator in the Elevator by Rick Charette, are included in this month’s EW Online Extras. Anyone interested in ordering one or more of these books can visit the EW Online Store.
