High-Rise Construction in the 1930s
The Last Glance section of the July 2010 ELEVATOR WORLD featured two photos from the construction of the Empire State Building in 1930. Titled "The Empire State Building -- Before Safety Was a Concern," the pictures demonstrated how safety was much less a concern then as it is today (and, no doubt, jobsite injury and fatality statistics reflect that!). Both photos were from a slideshow presentation sent to EW by Victor Bahna, which is included in this month's Online Extras. Also included is a similar slide show from the same era sent to EW from George W. Gibson, who said of them, "Amazing photos taken in 1932 from 69th floor of skyscraper under construction in NYC! I got them from the Otis Retirees." We hope you enjoy this look back at high-rise construction in the 1930s (and also hope this doesn't give anybody ideas for photo opportunities in the present day)! Sculptor Sergio Furnari produced a statue of the iconic workers sitting on the high-rise beam featured in Bahna's slideshow. NAEC Spring Educational Conference
Each year, the National Association of Elevator Contractors (NAEC) offers its members a midyear educational conference and EW's Ricia S. Hendrick was on hand in Ponte Verde, Florida, for this year's event. Her coverage is featured in the June 2010 issue, with additional coverage in this month's Online Extras. While the main focus of the conference is obviously education, there usually is sufficient downtime to allow participants and their guests time for recreation and socializing.
U.S. Patents
For many years, EW has included a section in each issue presenting the latest industry innovations that have received a U.S. Patent. As the industry has grown, and with it the new technology that makes it what it is today, the number of patents issued each month have become too great to all be included in the magazine. To allow those wanting to keep up with these latest innovations, this month's EW Online Extras includes the industry-related U.S. Patents that did not make it into the July 2010 issue. For more information about U.S. Patents, visit website: http://patft.uspto.gov/.
August Issues of ELEVATOR WORLD
In the August issue, EW will include features on the Shanghai World Financial Center and the World Elevator & Escalator Expo in China. Photos from these features can be viewed in the July 2010 Online Extras.
