WOMAN FOUND DEAD IN STUCK ELEVATOR IN SHANGHAI
A couple visiting a woman who lived on the fourth floor of a Shanghai residential building found her deceased with head injuries inside an elevator, which was stuck between the fifth and sixth floors, Shanghai Daily reports. The incident occurred on March 8, when the woman failed to come down to meet her guests. When she did not answer a cell phone call, the couple ascended the building’s stairs and discovered the stuck elevator with the woman dead inside. Residents reported recent malfunctions of the unit, and authorities are investigating.
JOINT VENTURE TO FOCUS ON ASEAN, MIDDLE EAST
EITA-Schneider and Shanghai STEP Electric Corp. have formed a joint venture to focus on the vertical-transportation market in Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the Middle East. The 50/50 partnership will manufacture, distribute and service elevator and escalator control systems and energy-efficiency equipment in Malaysia and beyond. Cai Liang, director of Shanghai STEP's Technical Committee, said the partnership promises to facilitate R&D, leading to development and delivery of more customized products.
SCHINDLER TAPS NEPAL DISTRIBUTOR
Schindler has named Techno Trade Pvt. Ltd. its exclusive partner for Nepal, responding to increased infrastructure and high-rise construction activity in the area, particularly in Kathmandu. During the March 10 announcement, Techno Trade Business Development Director Sumit Agrawal said he is optimistic that customers, such as consultants and architects, will want Schindler products.
NEW JEDDAH STATION BOASTS REGION’S LONGEST ESCALATORS
Among the 308 escalators in Haramain Railway's new Jeddah station are 70, 32-m-long units connecting platforms and a passenger lounge area that project Director Zohdi Al-Owaiwini said are the longest of their kind in the region, the Saudi Gazettereports. The station is part of the 450-km-long high-speed Haramain Railway, which will provide faster travel between the holy cities of Mecca and Medina, Saudi Arabia. It is expected to eventually carry three million passengers each year and is set to open in phases starting later this year.

SPIRAL ESCALATORS PART OF MITSUBISHI ELECTRIC ORDER
Mitsubishi Electric has delivered a 51-unit order to Shanghai New World Daimaru Department Store, a new 12-story mall scheduled to open in May. The order includes panoramic elevators and 12 of Mitsubishi Electric's proprietary spiral escalators located in the central atrium and serving six floors. It is the largest spiral-elevator order for a single project the company has ever received. Developed in 1985, the spiral escalators' design “gives passengers the astonishing feeling of gliding through the air in graceful arcs."
THYSSENKRUPP ELEVATOR TO SUPPLY 78 UNITS IN INNER MONGOLIA
ThyssenKrupp Elevator has been hired to supply 78 units to Jinyu New World Complex, a mixed-use development in Hohhot, Inner Mongolia. The job is scheduled to be complete in May. Hohhot is among Chinese cities growing thanks to a rural-to-urban shift. It has a population of approximately 3 million, versus 700,000 in the 1980s.
CTBUH SEEKS 2015 AWARDS ENTRIES
The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) is seeking entries for its 2015 awards. To simplify the process, it has created a new awards website and online submission portal. Award categories are Best Tall Building, Urban Habitat, Innovation and Performance. Winning projects will be featured in the annual Best Tall Buildings book. The deadline is April 30.
CTBUH CONFERENCE REGISTRATION OPEN
The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) has opened registration for its 2015 conference “Global Interchanges: Resurgence of the Skyscraper City.” The event will be held in New York City on October 26-30 (ELENET 612). CTBUH member registration for the conference is US$800 if paid before May 1, US$1,000 if paid between May 1 and September 25, and US$1,200 if paid after the latter date. The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) has published a report on its four-day conference held in Shanghai, "Future Cities: Sustainable Vertical Urbanism." THYSSENKRUPP ELEVATOR SETS UP SHOP IN BOOMING NEPAL
Real-estate prices are rising, high-rises are taking shape, and infrastructure is being built in Nepal, making it a booming elevator/escalator market, the Nepali Times reports. ThyssenKrupp Elevator is among the first to enter the market, and has tapped Infratech as its authorized dealer. Bharat Vishnani, ThyssenKrupp Elevator (India)'s managing director for India, said he is optimistic about Nepal's continued growth. Thus far, ThyssenKrupp Elevator has already sold 20 units to housing projects and expects its market share to grow.

THYSSENKRUPP ELEVATOR (CHINA) WINS HR AWARD
ThyssenKrupp Elevator (China) was presented with its second consecutive China Best Employers Award 2014 in January in Beijing, The Shanghai Elevator Trade Association (SETA) reported. The company was chosen for employer brand influence in campus recruitment in the talent market. Hosted by major Chinese social-network platform Da-Jie, the accolade involved a selection process of two months, during which more than 600,000 users voted. Voters included students, employees and human-resources (HR) businesspeople. Da-Jie has more than 24 million registered users and what SETA calls "deep influence on [the] white-collar and campus talent market."
KONE RESPONDS TO DUBAI APARTMENT TOWER FIRE
KONE reports it responded quickly to the February 21 fire at The Torch, a 1,082-ft.-tall apartment tower in Dubai. No one was seriously hurt in the fire, which officials believe started on approximately the 50th floor and was accidental. The elevator system incurred no fire damage, but water damaged some of the electrical equipment in the shaft, according to KONE, which reports: “Our service team was onsite immediately, and during the morning after the fire, they managed to get the first elevator back in service.” On February 24, The National reported two low-zone and two high-zone lifts were working.
TOSHIBA’S INDUSTRIAL ENCODERS CERTIFIED SIL 3
Toshiba Corp. has announced that its “Unified Controller nv-safety Series type1s” industrial controller range has received IEC 61508 (2010) (SIL 3) certification for functional safety from German international certification organization TÜV SÜD. Toshiba's new controllers support functional safety and shift user systems from operation mode to safety mode in the event of an accident, reducing the risk of danger. IEC 61508 is the basic international standard defining functional safety requirements for equipment and environments, including elevators. Its guidelines define three safety integrity levels (SILs) for evaluating product and safety functions, with SIL 3 as the highest for factory automation systems.
ELEVATOR WORLD SOFTWARE UPGRADES, NEW BOOKSTORE
Since January, Elevator World, Inc. has been working with its companywide software provider, Media Services Group (MSG), on upgrades that will provide significant benefits for both Elevator World employees and customers. MSG has made significant improvements in recent years and recently trained Elevator World staff on taking full advantage of them. In addition, Elevator World is designing a new online bookstore (www.elevatorbooks.com) intended to give its customers a better shopping experience. New additions include immediate email notifications with order number, automatic emails upon shipping that include tracking numbers, the ability to receive digital books within just a few minutes of purchase, and the ability to view order history and edit personal or company profiles at any time. SCHINDLER JOINS KONE AS SKYSCRAPER SUMMIT SPONSOR
Schindler has been announced as Diamond Sponsor of the second annual Smart Skyscrapers Summit, planned in Dubai on May 11-12. KONE was previously announced as Gold Sponsor. Elevator technology promises to be a big focus of the event, with Schindler’s Executive Managing Director Wassim Aboushaar scheduled to speak and a session on smart vertical transportation planned. HITACHI OUTFITTING MUMBAI’S CRESCENT BAY WITH 58 UNITS
Hitachi Lift India has been hired to outfit the six-tower residential development Crescent Bay (ELENET 568) in Mumbai with 58 energy-efficient elevators. The towers range from approximately 40 to more than 50 stories. L&T Parel LLP placed the order, which consists of 47 passenger and 11 service lifts. The system will utilize destination control, and the units will feature etched stainless steel and mirrors. The elevators will have seismic-detection functionality, and they will travel quickly to the nearest floor to allow passengers to evacuate during an earthquake.

ESCALATORS TO REPLACE FOOT OVERBRIDGE IN CHENNAI, INDIA
India’s Chennai Metro Rail Ltd. is replacing a steep foot overbridge connecting Park Station and Moore Market with escalators,The Hindu reports. The units are expected to be ready for use this week. Many people had been reluctant to use the steep bridge, leading to heavy foot traffic in the street and accidents. The escalators are expected to help that situation.
