KONE GAINS ORDER FOR BRISTOL HOSPITAL

Carillion plc has awarded an order to KONE for 41 energy-efficient elevators to be supplied in the new 800-bed Southmead Hospital in Bristol, the U.K. The elevators will feature KONE’s regenerative-drive systems, which can recover up to 20% of an elevator’s total energy consumption and are expected to help the hospital reach a Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method energy rating of “excellent” once it is completed. Advanced construction work started in August 2009, and the hospital is due to open in early 2014.

EESF PROGRAM AT PTA CONVENTION

The Elevator Escalator Safety Foundation (EESF) demonstrated its Safe-T Rider© program at the 114th National Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) Convention on June 10-12 in Memphis, Tennessee. After discussing the program with attendees, EESF signed up 8,959 children. The Foundation was able to meet with PTA decision makers and parents representing all 50 states, Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Many leaders, including PTA presidents and representatives, requested information to take back to their groups for review.

STATUE OF LIBERTY ELEVATOR SMOKE

On July 21, tourists were evacuated from the Statue of Liberty after smoke was detected inside the monument. The smoke was reportedly coming from an overheated elevator motor. A spokesman for the New York Fire Department stated that there were no injuries in the “minor smoke condition."
